POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Safety Coordinator effectively develops and implements programs, practices, and procedures to reduce the frequency and severity of accidental loss in the areas of workers’ compensation, Occupational Safety, general liability and property. Ensures that Plymouth is in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, which are designed to protect the human, financial, and physical assets of the Company. Creates a mill-wide safety culture through safety training, risk assessments and behavior modification programs.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates safety and health programs and procedures to ensure staff and facility safety.
  • Identifies potential causes for accidents and recommends changes in policies and procedures to prevent accidents and illnesses.
  • Monitors and controls company's safety standards in accordance with OSHA and state regulations.
  • Regularly conducts safety audits and advises mill management regarding safety hazards, potential safety hazards and ensures follow-up and closure for any hazardous conditions identified.
  • Benchmarks best practices and recommends changes as needed
  • Investigates and reports all mill accidents/injuries
      • Examines plans and specifications for new equipment to determine if all safety precautions have been included.
      • Evaluates human activities working with new equipment to identify hazards.
      • Tours plant to inspect fire and safety equipment, machinery, and facilities; to identify and correct potential hazards; and to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
      • Determines requirements for personal protective equipment.
      • Conducts or coordinates safety and first aid training. 
      • Conducts all new hire safety training and leads the Safety Committee.
  • Oversees mill safety activities and monitors for health and safety violations.
  • Conducts training for confined space entries and lockout/tag out permits.
  • Develops and monitors emergency action plans.
  • Assists Waste Treatment Coordinator with training activities and presentations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

QUALIFICATIONS and EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial health or hygiene, safety science, business administration or related field
  • 3-5 years’ experience in safety or EHS role in a manufacturing environment. Metals industry experience preferred.
  • Strong mathematical aptitude; attention to detail; ability to use calipers
  • OSHA certified trainer and/or Red Cross CPR first aid trainer certifications highly preferred
  • Preferred Certificates/Licenses/Registration:  Powered industrial equipment, Hazmat, Wastewater
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with individuals at all levels
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledge of security principles in a manufacturing facility
  • Flexibility to work with teams on 2nd or 3rd shift as needed
