The Brearley School, an independent girls’ school serving over 770 students K-XII, seeks a Teacher of Dance and Physical Education for a full-time, ongoing position beginning August 2024.

Responsibilities include:

  • teaching the Lower School dance curriculum, which includes classes in creative movement, various dance styles, improvisation, and composition
  • teaching Upper School dance electives as part of the PE curriculum (previous courses have included Introduction to Tap, Salsa, Dance History, Contemporary, Developing a Dance Film)
  • coaching the equivalent of two varsity seasons in the Middle and/or Upper School athletics program, which includes directing the Middle School dance program and one additional season of a team sport
  • collaborating with members of the Physical Education Department to build curriculum in PE, dance, and fitness across divisions
  • developing and delivering an inclusive, anti-bias, anti-racist pedagogy
  • prioritizing the safety of students and athletes in all settings
  • helping to plan and execute school-wide events hosted by the PE and Athletics Departments

 

The ideal candidate will:

  • have a bachelor’s degree in the subject area
  • have at least three years of experience in teaching dance within a K-12 community
  • have experience teaching different age groups from elementary to high school
  • demonstrate the ability to develop and adapt pedagogy, curriculum, and assessments for students with a range of skill levels and learning styles
  • show a commitment to helping girls think independently and develop confidence in their own abilities
  • experience in inclusive, anti-bias, anti-racist pedagogy
  • have excellent collaboration, written, and communication skills
  • model an inclusive behavior in all settings.

Salary

In 2024-25, the total full-time salary for this position ranges from $78,100 to $143,000, depending on experience.
