GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under immediate supervision (Plant and Equipment Mechanic I) or general supervision (Plant and Equipment Operator II), to perform a variety of skilled work involved in the maintenance and repair of specialized wastewater and/or water plant equipment, apparatus, and fixtures including pumps, engine motors, and valves.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Plant and Equipment Mechanic I – exercises no supervision.

Plant and Equipment Mechanic II may exercise technical and/or functional supervision over lower level personnel.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Operate city vehicles on a regular basis to check pump stations, travel to other treatment stations, and bring parts into town.

Replace water pumps and electrical motor bearings, motors, and related parts. Check for proper operation.

Lubricate and change oil in electrical motors and water pumps.

Perform general building maintenance and repair operations including rough carpentry, electrical wiring, plumbing, and related activities.

Use a variety of hand tools, cutting and welding equipment, and electrical test equipment.

Participate in the procurement of replacement parts and materials. 

Plant & Equipment Mechanic II

Disassemble, reassemble, or install impellers, end plates, bearings, seals, timing gears, filters, and radiators; paint pumps, motors, and piping. 

Troubleshoot, diagnose malfunctions, and make necessary repairs on mechanical equipment and related components.

Overhaul, test, and calibrate components including instruments, mega meters, and control valves. 

OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES

Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Standard practices, methods, tools, and materials used in mechanical trades.

Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work.

General methods of electrical, carpentry, and general maintenance repairs.

Safe driving principles and practices.

Skill to:

Operate a variety of bench and hand tools, machines and equipment of mechanical trades.

Safely operate a motor vehicle.

Ability to:

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Plant & Equipment Mechanic II

Lead, manage, and perform as a team member in a manner that accomplishes the Division’s mission and treats team members with dignity, courtesy, and respect.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

Experience:

General maintenance experience with some exposure to mechanical repairs is preferred.

Education/Training:

A high school diploma or GED is required.

License or Certificate: 

A valid Texas driver’s license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.

Ability to obtain a “D” Wastewater License within one (1) year of employment is required for the Plant and Equipment Mechanic I position.

Ability to obtain a “C” Wastewater License within three (3) years of employment is required for the Plant & Equipment Mechanic II position.

Special Requirements:

Exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confined work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.

Ability to travel to different work sites.
