Summary:  Under limited supervision and with significant independent judgment, appraises damaged vehicles and prepares appraisals, coordinates internal and external auto appraisal activities, and the automobile direct repair program for the claims function by performing the following duties:


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  1. Assesses damaged vehicles and prepares itemized damage appraisals.
    1. Estimates parts, materials, and labor necessary to restore vehicles to their pre-damaged condition, using standard automotive labor and parts-cost manuals, knowledge of automotive repair, and estimating software
    2. Evaluates practicality of repair as opposed to payment of market value of vehicle before accident and makes recommendations
    3. Provides claims personnel with advice on vehicle repair, parts costs, garage expertise and opinion on whether specific damage is related to a specific accident
    4. Determines if damages are sufficient to declare the vehicle a total loss, including salvage value


  1. Assists with coordination of internal and external auto appraisal activities
    1. Recommends desk review criteria
    2. Recommends guidelines for selection of independent auto appraisers
    3. Monitors vendor performance and provides feedback to management
    4. Recommends vendor relationships for appointment/termination
    5. Maintains roster of approved vendors

  2. Coordinates the automobile direct repair program by:
    1. Recommends criteria for the selection of preferred auto repair shops
    2. Selects auto repair shops based on criteria
    3. Conducts re-inspections of auto repairs


  1. May complete inspections to determine damage and to prepare appraisals by visiting body shops, salvage yards and/or accident scenes for inspections, negotiating to reach an agreed upon repair price.

  2. May serve as a member of project teams, contributing to the achievement of project objectives


6.   May provide leadership to junior staff through guidance and training.


7.   Performs other duties as assigned
