About the Role


We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Analytics Director to join our team. The Analytics Director role provides the perfect opportunity for high impact through data in the solar industry. You will hone an understanding of the key drivers for successful solar project development, helping ensure Black Bear’s projects maximize value for our clients. The Analytics Director will have deep expertise in solar and storage analytics, financial modeling, and federal and state-level renewables policy. The successful candidate will also build aptitude in coordination and leadership through the team’s unique exposure to projects through their lifecycle. This position is highly cross-functional and requires close collaboration with other Black Bear teams including Client Operations, Transactions, and Development. The ideal candidate has experience managing technical teams and effectively communicating to both technical and non-technical audiences. We seek a motivated self-starter with superb mathematical and analytical skills, rigorous attention to detail, love for complexity, and excitement about building new tools and processes to drive internal efficiencies.


Your primary responsibility will be to lead the analysis team:



  • Oversee solar and storage offset rate analysis using customer utility bills and interval data. This requires a mastery of Energy Toolbase, understanding of net metering and unique utility incentive programs, retail supply agreements, and storage modeling.

  • Provide design recommendations through evaluation of project size and rate tariff configuration options, storage options, and utility programs to optimize project value for our clients

  • Research available incentives, utility policies, rate tariffs, local requirements, taxes, and other project inputs for core and emerging solar and storage markets in the United States

  • Manage Black Bear’s in-house financial model, and adapt the model to market changes and different use cases

  • Collaborate with Black Bear’s head of software to identify new use cases for optimizing Black Bear analyses including automation of bill transcription, and co-lead the improvement of our indicative economics database


Required Skills/ Experience



  • 4 -10 years of experience in renewable energy and analytics

  • Proven experience using Energy Toolbase or equivalent energy analytics software (exceptions will be made for exemplary candidates)

  • Ability and passion to iterate through multiple analyses to find optimal solution to complex problems

  • Renewable energy policy and utility expert; knowledge of existing and emerging markets, utility rate nuances, and interconnection strategies

  • Understanding of energy contract structures (Community Solar, EPC, PPA, etc.)

  • Experience designing storage systems to complement solar projects

  • 1+ year of management experience

  • Excellence in Excel - specifically building and maintaining financial models with complex data relationships, knowledge of VBA a plus

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into digestible takeaways


Preferred Skills/Experience



  • Experience with renewable energy including revenue stacks and project finance

  • Knowledge of Inflation Reduction Act policies and measures related to Solar

  • Familiarity with real estate finance and solar projects

  • Proficiency in ESRI ArcGIS Pro

  • Working knowledge of SQL and relational data structures


Salary and Benefits Information



  • Annual Salary $120,000 - $160,000 based on qualifications
