Motion Picture Industry Pension & Health Plans (MPI) is looking for a detail-oriented and strategic Controller, preferably with experience managing pension and health plan finances. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in overseeing the financial aspects of our Pension & Health Plans (the Plans), ensuring compliance with regulations, and contributing to the overall financial wellbeing of the Plans. This role reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for oversight of the accounting department and all financial functions.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Pension & Health Plan Financial Management- Lead and manage day-to-day financial operations of the Plans, including financial reporting, cash management, general ledger accounting, accounts payable, payroll, and internal accounting controls.
  • Oversee the administration and financial management of the Plans, monitoring plan performance, analyzing trends, and providing recommendations for improvements.
  • Maintain banking relationships for multiple commercial and trust accounts.
  • Review transfers of funds for medical premium payments.
  • Prepare for and attend monthly Committee and Board meetings.
  • Financial and Tax Reporting- Oversee the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements and reporting for four plans, including review of all supporting schedules and documentation.
  • Supervise timely and accurate preparation of tax returns (e.g., Form 5500s), budgets and forecasts, account reconciliations, and investment reports.
  • Develop reports for management and the Board, detailing plan performance, costs, and financial projections.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting- Lead the budgeting process for Plan Office expenses (i.e., overhead), collaborating with department heads and finance team.
  • Monitor cash balances in each of the Plan banking accounts to ensure sufficient cash flow to manage ongoing expenditures of each Plan.
  • Develop financial forecasts and models to support strategic decision-making and ensure the financial health of the Plans.
  • Report on actual performance of Plan Office expenses against budget, identifying and understanding variances and implementing corrective actions when necessary.
  • Compliance & Risk Management- Stay abreast of regulatory changes related to pension and health plans, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and industry standards.
  • Identify and mitigate financial risks associated with the plans.
  • Audit Coordination- Coordinate annual financial and other audit functions with external auditors.
  • Work closely with auditors and others in the Plan organization to provide necessary documentation and ensure a smooth audit process.
  • Other Responsibilities- Direct and supervise staff, professional and clerical.
  • Lead the upgrade of financial accounting system.
  • Coordinate with other senior leadership team members to improve processes and procedures.
  • Help create a culture of inclusion and collaboration across the finance team and its stakeholders.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA and/or “Big 4” background strongly preferred.
  • Trust fund accounting and pension and/or health plan experience a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills, and a proactive approach to building working relationships with all levels of personnel and external stakeholders.
  • Thorough knowledge of GAAP, accounting standards, and financial statements.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with changing priorities, communicating changes in scope and schedule, to all parties concerned, as well as adhering to reporting deadlines.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience as a Controller or similar role, with at least 7 years of experience supervising Finance/Accounting employees; ability to guide and motivate staff.
  • Intermediate proficiency level in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, as well as a working knowledge of ERP financial systems. Microsoft SL, Dynamics 365 Business Central, and FRx knowledge a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail and high standards in quality and accurate reporting.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.
  • Strong leadership traits to inspire and motivate the Finance team, embracing diversity of thought, background, and experience.

 

The anticipated base salary for this position is $165,000 - $200,000 annually. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held.
