Automation Engineer (Levels I-III)

ABOUT THE JOB
The Automation Engineer plays an important role in project teams responsible for performing pre-studies, RFE studies, and project studies/project implementations of strategic important projects at the SSAB facility in Mobile, Alabama. Projects can span from equipment upgrades to infrastructure projects, both greenfield projects as well as revamping and development of existing equipment. Depending on experience, the Automation Engineer can either be responsible or co-responsible for the automation aspects of the project from idea to installation and production takeover. The position offers the right candidate the possibility to work in an international setting in cross-functional teams and in close cooperation with the ordering organization.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Participate in and drive pre studies, RFE studies and projects (planning, execution, and commissioning) with focus on all the automation aspects of the studies and projects
- Work closely with the ordering/receiving parties (production department for example)
- Work closely with other team members, including for example Mechanical and Civil Engineers, Project Managers, Process development Engineers, Purchasing Department and Finance
- Work closely with Maintenance (for planning of spare parts, repairs and safe access to equipment etc.)
- Collaborate with supporting resources from the QTC center in Oxelösund, Sweden (for example Electrical, Automation, Civil and Mechanical Engineers)
- Interact and coordinate with external consultants
- Help define project scope, goals, and deliverables in support of business goals
- Help implement project plans, including timelines, budgets, and resource allocation
- Help manage project risks and develop contingency plans as needed
- Help monitor project progress and ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet technical specifications and quality standards
- Ensure compliance with electrical engineering, regulatory, and company standards
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with cross-functional teams
- Ability to work in a structured and well organized manner
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- B.S. degree in a technical discipline or equivalent experience
- General software development
- Exercise sound engineering and economic judgement and discretion with regard to process control decision-making
- Proficiency in various programming languages (including C/C++, C#, and VB, C# ASP.NET, EF, HTML5, jQuery, HMI applications)
- Experience with the Linux operating system (Debian experience preferred)
- Experience programming real-time software systems
- Good problem solving, organizational and communication skills, both oral and written
- Capable of working effectively with minimal direction or supervision
- Strong knowledge of SQL database including configuring and querying
- Trans SQL code for storage procedures
- Manage the implementation of all applicable company and commercial standards (ISO, JSA/OSHA)
- Networking experience including set up and troubleshooting
- The ability to work without direct supervision
- The ability to work well with contractors and SSAB maintenance personal on technical problems
Preferred:
- Previous experience in software engineering/architecture
- Previous experience in programming industrial device control systems
- Previous experience in troubleshooting industrial electrical and electronic systems
- Formal training in computer hardware/software from manufacturers or suppliers
- Certifications in computer skills such as database management, networking, specialized languages or software suites
- Possess the knowledge of process interactions between control layers and physical processes in a steel plate manufacturing facility
- Equipment and process knowledge including industrial control computer processors, multi-tasking operating systems, real time communications systems, programmable logic controllers, manufacturing concepts and the ability to integrate them into a working process control system
- Mathematical concepts supporting closed-loop real-time manufacturing controls
- Experience with steel heat treatment processes, industrial tracking, industrial shipping
- Previous experience supporting computer systems in a production facility
