About this opportunity:

This position serves as the territory’s subject matter expert on long-term disaster recovery.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide technical guidance and best practices to divisional disaster services personnel tasked with developing and implementing long-term recovery programs after major disasters.
  • Assist the division in collaborating with key stakeholders and ensuring long-term disaster recovery plans align with the needs and priorities of the affected community.
  • Serve as a Salvation Army representative to other long-term disaster recovery partners in government and the private and nonprofit sectors.
  • Assist with developing and delivering training courses to internal and external stakeholders on casework, case management, and other long-term recovery-related topics.

What we are looking for in you:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Emergency Management, Social Work, or Behavioral Science.  AND
  • Two years of emergency management and/or social services experience. Experience in casework, case management, long-term recovery programming, and/or community resource mobilization is a plus.  OR
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Valid State Driver’s License.
  • AEM or CEM certification is preferred but not required.
  • Certification as Salvation Army authorized disaster instructor (must be earned within six months of hire).

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

The position is always in emergency management and on-call in case of emergencies. Vacation time is restricted from August 15 through September 31 during the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season. Must be deployable during a disaster incident to support emergency operations for a minimum of 14 days and work extended hours. During a disaster incident, this position may be deployed to support on-site disaster relief operations. This may include operating in “hardship conditions” where basic amenities, such as power and water, may not be readily available. Working conditions during a disaster operation may be extremely hectic and stressful.  Work does require regular travel to attend meetings, and conduct training or presentations where there may be physical discomforts associated with driving a vehicle, traveling by airplane, changes in the weather, and staying overnight in a hotel.  The Salvation Army reserves the right to revise the job description or require different or additional tasks to be performed based on the organization’s needs or when circumstances change.
