THE SALVATION ARMY JOB DESCRIPTION – Camp Challenge Course Specialist

 

Job Summary

Provides direction on the development and delivery of challenge course activities for the Salvation Army camps.  Deliver challenge course activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities.  Manages the physical operation of the challenge course facilities and equipment. 

 

Essential Functions

Expands the camp’s challenge course activities with new challenges.  

 

Delivers progressive challenge course program activities.  

 

Trains other staff in their challenge course responsibilities.  

 

Ensures campers and staff follows safety procedures for challenge course activities. 

 

Ensures properly fitted protective headgear is worn by all participants.  

 

Evaluates and documents challenge course abilities of campers and staff.  

 

Conducts daily checks of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness and good repair.  

 

Secures and locks all equipment at the end of each session.  

 

Identifies and manages environmental and other potential hazards related to the activity. 

 

Ensures record keeping of regular inspection and maintenance of all equipment and elements utilized in adventure/challenge activities.  

 

Performs all duties in accordance with prescribed regulatory compliance guidelines as well as American Camp Association accreditation standards.

 

Participates enthusiastically as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights and other all-camp activities and camp functions.  

 

Sits with camper tables during meals and serve as a table monitor when needed.  

 

Keeps personal living quarters neat, clean and ready for inspection.  

 

Be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Camp Director.

 

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of fundamentals, rules and regulations of challenge courses.  

 

Ability to plan, develop, facilitate, lead and supervise challenge course events and activities.  

 

Ability to build and maintain effective mentor relationships with children.  

 

Ability to communicate effectively with campers and camp staff.  

 

Ability to ensure the safety of recreation participants.

 

Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.  

 

Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.  

 

Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.  

 

Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.  

 

Ability to meet attendance requirements.  

 

Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.

 

Education and Experience

Has at least six (6) weeks of experience in a management or supervisory capacity in similar type(s) of programs(s) within the past five (5) years.

 

Certifications

Certification obtained within the past three (3) years from a recognized organization or certifying body for the type of activities offered or documented training AND recent experience leading/facilitating the type of activities offered?

 

CPR and First Aid Certification

 

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Some physical requirements of the Camp Challenge Course Specialist position could be endurance including climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate challenge course equipment and activities are required.  Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Have a willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering a program in the facility available.  Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.

Additional Information

Camp Staff Orientation will be held 6/5/2024 – 6/9/2024 and participation is required.

 

The 2024 Summer Camp program will be held 6/10/2024-7/13/2024.  If you are unable to work the entire program session, please let us know on your application.
