Associate Director, Facilities & Lab Management


Xencor is an innovative, clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company located in the Los Angeles area—near Pasadena—and in San Diego. We have an excellent opportunity for an Associate Director, Facilities & Lab Management to join our team.



This position will be based in Pasadena, CA. and be fully onsite.



Responsible for management of the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the company’s Research & Development laboratory and office spaces

Job Duties Include:

  • Oversees facilities operations
    • Oversees the general maintenance of facilities & equipment for all Xencor locations
    • Ensures office and laboratory supplies consistently meet operational needs
    • Interacts with service providers and Xencor functions to leverage and optimize maintenance support resources, programs, and practices
    • Provides leadership and coordination of maintenance operations, systems, procedures, and documentation development
    • Provides oversight of logistics (e.g., setups and tear downs) for internal company events
    • Implements and manages maintenance, work order, building management, and inventory management systems
  • Leads facilities projects
    • Manages construction projects through internal facilities team [or employees] and outside vendors
    • Leads project teams to complete initiatives within scope, on time, and on budget
  • Oversees vendor relationships and performance
    • Selects and manages outside vendor relationships for building maintenance and related work
    • Manages vendors and vendor contracts, identifying opportunities to improve service and value to Xencor.
    • Review work performed and approve ad-hoc improvements to services.
    • Ensures that all vendors and service providers are compliant with requirements for contracts, purchase orders, insurance, training and access.
  • Drives other facility management activities
    • Adheres to all department and company-wide policies regarding conduct, performance, and procedures
    • Provides oversight and direction to direct reports, as applicable, in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures. The responsibilities may include, but are not limited to recruiting, training, communicating job expectations, appraising and managing job performance, delivering feedback and coaching, and providing career development planning and opportunities
    • Manages quality improvement, efficiency improvement, budget analysis, and cost reduction programs relative to the management of our assets
    • Performs other duties as required.




  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in Engineering, Business Administration, Construction, Facility Management, Property Management, or equivalent
  • 15+ years of practical work experience in the Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical, or Medical Device industry, with relevant leadership and people management roles in facilities management, facility space planning, construction, and/or engineering

Position also requires:

  • Knowledge of HAZMAT handling programs, electrical, plumbing, security, HVAC, carpentry, lab utilities (gases and RO/DI water systems), refrigeration, local building codes and disaster recovery procedures
  • Proficiency with MS Office
  • Experience managing facilities and / or large-scale facilities projects in the biopharmaceutical industry
  • Customer-focused orientation, with the ability to work effectively with all levels of employees, management, and vendors
  • Ability to read facility / building drawings and diagrams
  • Ability to effectively organize, multi-task, and work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven work environment
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively without continuous oversight or supervision
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment or materials
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills to maintain and write reports, work orders, and procedures
  • Experience in cost-reduction programs and vendor management
  • Ability to demonstrate competencies applicable for job based on Xencor’s Leadership Competency Model
  • Ability to effectively manage others through coaching and supervision, in accordance with company policies and practices. Ensures employee performance meets the organization’s expectations for conduct, productivity, quality, continuous improvement, and goal accomplishment.

Additional Requirements for Laboratory and Research Related Jobs

This role may involve exposure to experimental subjects and/or specimens including infected samples, plus various Hazardous Materials and infectious agents (Bloodborne Pathogens, or other potentially infections materials (OPIMs). Therefore, the following are also required:

  • Ability to follow the established Environmental Health & Safety rules, procedures, and/or BioSafety Guidelines
  • Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDSs)
  • Knowledge of biosafety techniques and aseptic/gowning practices
  • Experience with laboratory safety standards and procedures, including biohazard handling and disposal techniques, and the ability to ensure laboratory compliance with required safety regulations

Occasional travel may be required, including travel between Xencor’s Pasadena and San Diego offices. Work for this position is generally performed at Xencor’s worksite and requires full-time commitment.



Expected Base Salary Range: $140,000.00 - $165,000.00

The actual salary will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications, including skills, competencies, education and experience.
