POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction and supervision of the Executive Director, the Camp Operations Director will oversee and ensure the quality of all aspects of the Summer Resident Camp Program, Family Camp, and Conference and Retreat, including the hiring and supervision of summer staff, recruitment of campers, and implementation of the actual elements of the programs. They will also have supporting roles in the marketing of all CSB programs and fundraising efforts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

The Camp Operations Director must understand and be willing to learn the necessary skills required for the successful completion of duties including: 

  • Responsible for the safe and effective operation of all CSB program areas.
  • Assures and upholds adherence to all camping industry standards set forth by the American Camp Association and by which we are accredited. The areas covered under these standards include Health and Wellness, Operations, Aquatics, Program Design, Human Resources, Program Trip and Travel, Transportation, and Food Service.
  • In conjunction with camp management staff, compiles and assures that all supporting documentation required by the American Camp Association (through the above-mentioned standards) is maintained and organized in appropriate manuals.
  • Is integrally involved in the advertisement of seasonal positions, associated travel recruitment (both domestic and abroad), application processing, interviews, pay negotiation, and placement.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates, supervises, and completes payroll for summer and seasonal staff.
  • Ensures the advertised staff ratios and qualifications are met through the hiring process.
  • Maintains cultural diversity at camp by fostering a community of foreign and domestic staff to enrich the Summer Resident Camp program. Must be able to relate to and help guide these staff members through the hiring process and camp experience.
  • Schedule, oversee, and participate heavily in Staff Training Week for resident camp.
  • Communicate with camper parents regarding their child's experience at CSB. Listens with sensitivity to all parent concerns and responds in a timely fashion, addressing each concern and implementing change when deemed appropriate.
  • Maintains and orders all equipment and supplies for resident camp bay, pool, and land activities, and coordinates with the conference director to meet equipment and supply needs for conferencing.
  • Schedules annual inspections of all structures, (Wet Willie Water Slide, Alpine Tower and Zip Lines, etc.).
  • Schedules instructors for all specialized areas during resident camp Certification Week (Alpine Tower/Zip Line, Sailing, Motor Boating, etc,).
  • Travels to marketing shows of various formats to attract new camper enrollment.
  • Strives to attain the camper registration goal set forth by the Executive Director each year, according to budget goals.
  • Strives to improve all aspects of the camp program, utilizing downtime between seasons to research and implement improvements and new programs for the following season.
  • Participates in delivering all conference programming needs, including, but not limited to Kayaking, High Ropes, Low Ropes/Team Building, Archery, Sports, and Leisure.
  • Reports to the Executive Director regarding all responsibilities and is responsible for camp supervision in the absence of the Executive Director.
  • Acts as a liaison to the Y Family Centers through marketing, recruitment efforts in key centers, neighborhood/family shows, etc.
  • Plan, develop, and implement camper recruitment/retention strategies, including any required communications for these purposes throughout the year.
  • Responsible for the planning and budgeting of Resident Camp income and Merchandise Sales income as well as the following expense areas: Camp Supplies, Sports Supplies, Online Marketing, Seasonal Staff Wages, Equipment Maintenance and Repair that relates directly to the resident camp program, Employment Fees, Marketing Trips and Travel.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending conventions and conferences related to the camping industry. Attends the American Camp Association standards training at least once every 3 years.
  • Acts as a fully participating member of the camp management team, which includes the Program Director, Business Director, Administration Director, Maintenance and Property staff, Conference/Food Service Director, and Executive Director.
  • Provides strong leadership and support for attaining the Association's goals and objectives.
  • Provides strong fiscal management in all areas of responsibility by adhering to the annual budget.
  • Communicates the YMCA's mission and objectives to the community.
  • Assists with and fosters strong fundraising through Annual Giving Campaign participation.
  • Recognizes the necessity to work significant night and weekend hours, and does so willingly.
  • Provides safe, enriching programs for all aspects of CSB.
  • Executes all other tasks assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor's Degree and or equivalent experience in a related field.
  • Intimate knowledge of camp industry standards (American Camp Association).
  • Minimum 3 years experience in managing the above-mentioned programs.
  • Practical knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Strong background in staff supervision and leadership.

PREFERRED ATTRIBUTES:

  • Knowledge and experience dealing with international personnel and relationships.
  • Working knowledge and skill in camp activities offered - Motorboat Driving, Sailing, High Ropes, Archery and Rifle Range Operations, and Aquatics.
  • Experience in budget management.
  • Public speaking and customer service experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Is subject to frequent interruptions
  • Will be in contact with all levels of staff, board members, guests, vendors, business associates, applicants, and visitors
  • Must be able to work beyond normal working hours in order to serve the needs of internal customers, weekends and holidays as needed for early morning meetings, extended weekday meetings/training or weekend training/meetings

ACCOUNTABILITY: 

Accountable for the completion of assigned goals as measured by the number of people served, cause-driven measures, service satisfaction scores, operating results, and supervisor evaluation of assigned duties. Continuation of employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory results to meet the minimum requirements of the position.  The requirements may include background checks, drug tests, driver’s license records, CPS, and/or criminal background checks.
