POSITION SUMMARY:
The Aquatics Coordinator will provide supervision and instruction to members and staff in the aquatics department by listening actively, strengthening relationships and ensuring a safe, fun and enjoyable aquatic experience for members and program participants. The coordinator must have leadership and continuous follow through.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Assists in recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling and supervising personnel and volunteers as assigned by the District Aquatics Director. Be on deck for swim lessons to build relationships with families as well as coach and mentor staff to ensure program quality and standards are being upheld. Ensuring swim lesson communication is delivered in a timely manner.
  2. Assists District Aquatics Director in ensuring records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  3. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
  4. Adheres to all YMCA of South Hampton Roads policies, procedures, rules, regulations and best practices.
  5. Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
  6. Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR trainings.
  7. Assists in developing program schedules.
  8. Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  9. Attends meetings as assigned.
  10. Complete Blood borne pathogens course annually, and other trainings as required
  11. Assists in YMCA fundraising activities and special events.
  12. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  13. Ability to perform all functions as those they supervise and meet qualifications and certifications of Lifeguard III and Swim Instructor.
  14. Performs and adheres to safety, cleanliness, and uniform standards associated with COVID-19 prevention.
  15. Assists in all areas as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification High School Diploma or GED equivalent 
  • Current YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding certifications (instructor preferred).
  • Current YMCA Swim Instructor Certification (trainer preferred) or Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
  • Will be required to have trainer certifications in CPR, AED, O2, and Swim Instructor within 1 year of employment 
  • Will be required to obtain Aquatic Facility Operator certification within six months of employment
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness 
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards 
  • Maintain all required certifications (active) 
  • One or more years of lifeguard/swim instructor supervisory experience preferred
  • Minimum age of 21

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently:
Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
  • Must be able to remain alert.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and ∙ loud situations.
  • Ability to work inside and outside (environments include humidity, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions)
  • Must be able to lift and pull 50 pounds
