Facilities Structural Engineer
POSITION PURPOSE
Develop, design, and analyze structures and other civil systems in support of various plant facility and machine improvements as directed by the Manager Facilities Engineering. This includes buildings, cranes and crane runways, lifting devices, process machines and drive lines, foundations for both buildings and equipment, railways, roadways, bridges, waterways, walkways, platforms, and any other facility or system involving civil and structural concerns.
Management of various civil and structural projects as directed. Responsible to ensure that changes or improvements to plant facilities, infrastructure, and machinery are structurally sound and adhere to accepted industry and regulatory standards for strength and safety. Conduct periodic plant wide structural inspections to ensure facilities are sound and manage any necessary remediation and repair work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Structural Design and Engineering as directed.
- Work with engineering, operations, and maintenance to solve structural and civil problems and to develop solutions.
- Fully analyze, and as needed measure, facility and system structural performance to troubleshoot failures and to design solutions.
- Conduct detailed FEA modeling as needed of various building and machine components to optimize design and improve performance.
- Certifying and designing fall protection tie-off anchorage points.
- Perform hands on annual plantwide facility structural inspections and then manage any remediation and repair work. Requires extensive field work including working with trades to access facilities including aerial work and requires adherence to all facility safety protocols.
Manage Expense and Capital Projects as directed.
- Implement Capital Projects
- Direct and authorize project activities from conception, through design, fabrication, construction management, and project close-out.
- Develop complete installation and modification scope.
- Design equipment changes and supervise internal and external design and engineering personnel to develop complete project drawings and documentation. Requires extensive field verification and field work to ensure project design and installation meets production needs and is free from interferences with existing equipment and ongoing operations.
- Direct the activities for design engineers, designers and draftsmen, contractors, suppliers, and vendors to bring everything together to execute the project.
- Develop complete implementation and installation plan, including schedule, installation downtime requirements, labor, equipment requirements, etc. to install the complete project scope.
- Develop and implement startup plan. Inform all concerned parties as to changes involved and new procedures needed.
- Control spending and labor hours to within 10% of approved budgets (or $10,000 maximum). Keep track of budget and spending, and approve all invoices.
- Project review, financial check, and closeout.
- Ensure that the project was completed, that the budget was maintained, and work order is closed.
- Lead teams to perform problem solving analysis to solve operating and equipment problems.
- Review equipment design and use to improve equipment, allowing it to perform better, and reduce operating and maintenance costs.
- Develop changes to equipment that allow increased production, reduced delays, improved quality, and/or enhanced operations throughout the facility.
- This project work can be multi-disciplinary in approach covering all engineering aspects, not just limited to structural or civil frameworks.
Provide technical advice and engineering support to Upper Management, Mill Superintendents, Mill Engineers and other plant personnel.
- Manage the resources of outside engineering and consultants to perform large-scale engineering analysis and studies that otherwise could not be performed by SSAB Internal resources.
- Perform feasibility studies and analysis, conceptual planning, and designs that aid management in making decisions. Make necessary engineering calculations for strength and durability of equipment and systems.
- Perform Value Engineering to allow Value Purchasing of major equipment, buildings, machines, components, and spares.
- Utilizing experience in all aspects of operations, environmental requirements, safety, and engineering provide insights and analysis on a wide-range of issues facing SSAB.
Liaison and interface for outside resources.
- Utilizing experience and job knowledge make use of outside resources, peers, and others to then evaluate, interpret, extrapolate, and then share this knowledge and insight, as appropriate, for the betterment of operations at SSAB.
- Act as technical liaison with insurance companies as needed.
- Provide technical support to individual maintenance departments on an as needed basis.
Solid Model Design
- Develop system and component designs using solid modeling software.
- Using solid modeling conduct component fit and inference analysis.
QUALIFICATIONS
Competencies and Experience
Required:
- 5 to 10 years’ experience in structural design, structural analysis, project and construction management, and strong leadership ability.
- Must have working knowledge of commercial structural type software packages (i.e., RISA, Tekla Structures, or similar).
- Specific background including: heavy industry and/or heavy construction.
- Experience with 3D solid modeling software (SolidWorks, Inventor), and AutoCAD.
- Microsoft Office products.
- SSAB utilizes: RISA, Tekla Structures, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MaxView, Maintenance Connection, DayForce HCM, and other programs which you will be trained on, as required.
Preferred:
- FEA and solid modeling skills.
- Specific background including: electric arc furnace shops, ladle metallurgy facilities, continuous casters, rolling mills, finishing mills, general metals industry.
Education
Required:
- Bachelors of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering with major emphasis in structural analysis, structural engineering and design.
- Certified Structural Engineer (PE, SE)
Preferred:
- Master of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES / DIRECT REPORTS
There are no positions which directly report to this position. However you will be required to work with SSAB designers and draftsmen on site, as well as directing the activities of outside engineering and design consultants, ironworkers, millwrights, carpenters, and other trades and crafts as required for execution of the various projects, tasks, and assignments.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The employee will frequently be required to:
- Sit up to 8 hours a day working on design and engineering requirements.
- Conduct site visits around the facility to investigate and observe the various plant areas.
The position requires the following vision and hearing capabilities:
- Talking person to person, on the phone, and/or in group settings.
- Hearing in person, on the phone, and/or in group settings.
- Vision at near, mid, and far range.
- Peripheral vision and depth perception.
The employee will occasionally be required to:
- Balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and climb ladders and equipment.
- Go up on crane runways and building roofs to perform inspections and investigations of structural or building problems.
The employee will work in the following conditions:
- Extreme hot and cold conditions, and humid conditions.
- Amid fumes, dust, grease, dirt, and smoke.
- In confined areas and high places.
- Around equipment in motion.
- Amid noise.
- Amid mechanical and electrical hazards.
- While wearing safety equipment and/or clothing for protection from hazards.
POSITION TYPE – WORK HOURS - TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
- Position is full time, salary, and is eligible for overtime over 48 hours, straight time.
- A small amount of travel is expected for this position.
